The Owen Sound Foodland Junior Attack Under-15 Red team picked
up a win and a tie against the Bruce Peninsula Predators in back-to-back games
over the weekend.
On Sunday the teams faced off in Western Ontario Athletic
Association action at the Harry Lunley Bayshore Community Centre.
It was the Predators who struck first 2:32 into the game to
go up 1-0.
Owen Sound answered back at the 4:17 mark on the powerplay,
when Derek Haak scored after taking a cross-ice feed from Jackson Mock. Isaac
Flood-Brown also assisted on the goal.
Owen Sound went up 2-1 less than a minute later when Flood-Brown
fired a shot off the end glass that Nash corralled and tucked it into the goal
at 5:09 of the opening frame.
Cole Cairns gave Owen Sound the 3-1 lead when he picked up
the puck behind the net and scored on a wraparound at the 4:23 mark of the
second period. Flood-Brown picked up his third assist of the game on the goal.
But Bruce Peninsula got one back with just over a minute to
play, when they scored on a rebound after Junior Attack goalie Jacob Fry made
the first save.
The Predators kept coming and tied the game 5:44 into the
third period on a shorthanded goal.
The Junior Attack restored the one goal lead when Mock put
one in off the rush with just under six minutes remaining.
The Predators pushed for the equalizer late, with Fry making
several big saves to keep his team in the lead. But with just five seconds
left, a high tip on a hard shot found the back of the net and the teams each
settled for a point in a 4-4 tie.
On Saturday, the Junior Attack travelled up Highway 6 to
face the Predators at the Wiarton arena.
It didn’t take Owen Sound long to get going as Haak put the
visitors on the board at the 1:36 mark of the first when a slapper from the top
of the circle snuck the puck in between the goalie’s blocker and the post.
Curtis Cressman earned an assist on the play.
Owen Sound added another before the first period was over.
After a save off the helmet by Junior Attack goaltender Mikayla Wingrove, the
puck bounced right onto the stick of Mock, who after a burst of speed, put the
puck off the post and in to give his team a 2-0 lead.
The second period would see Owen Sound double its lead.
First it was Gavin Gowan at the 7:23 mark, who gathered a
loose puck behind the goal and beat a diving Bruce Peninsula goalie on a
wraparound to give his team the 3-0 lead.
Mock scored his second of the game just a few minutes later,
roofing it home after getting a nice pass from Cairns at 9:35 of the period to
give Owen Sound the 4-0 lead.
Owen Sound extended its lead in the middle of the third when
Gowan fed Nash on a two-on-one and he fired it home. Haak also got an assist on
the play. For Nash it was his first game of the season after an injury kept him
out of his team’s first five games.
But Bruce Peninsula got one back just 29 seconds later when
a hard wrister beat Wingrove to break her shutout bid.
But just two-and-a-half minutes later, the Junior Attack closed
out the game with one more goal when Cairns took a feed from Isaac Flood-Brown,
walked into the middle of the ice and wristed it home, giving Owen Sound the
6-1 win.
With the win and tie, the Junior Attack Red team
now has a 3-3-1 record. They have a two-week break between games, before
heading to Chesley on Dec. 3 to take on the Arran-Elderslie Ice Dogs B squad in
Chesley.
