The Owen Sound Foodland under-15 Junior Attack Red team continued
their regular season on Sunday, Nov. 5, travelling to Southampton to take on
the league-leading Storm.
It was the first game in two weeks for the Junior Attack,
who were still searching for their first win on the season after a pair of
close losses to open the season.
Saugeen Shores got the best of Owen Sound in their season
opener on Oct. 20, shutting out the Junior Attack 3-0, who were looking for a
bounce-back game.
The Junior Attack were ready for the league’s top offence
this time around, using their tenacity and hard work to keep the Storm’s speedy
skaters in check.
Both teams traded chances in the first period, but Jacob Fry
made several big saves in the Owen Sound goal to keep Saugeen Shores off the
scoreboard. The Junior Attack had some close calls around the Storm goal as
well, but were unable to solve the opposing netminder and the teams ended the
first period locked in a scoreless draw.
The Storm would strike first in the second period when a high
point shot was tipped in front of the Owen Sound goal and found its way into
the back of the net.
The Junior Attack would get a chance to tie the game up a
short time later with a power-play opportunity. After working the puck around
the offensive zone, it would find Derek Haak behind the Storm goal, who shook a
defender and tucked the puck into the open cage on a wraparound, knotting the
game at 1-1 at the 11:40 mark.
Again, the teams would trade some chances late in the frame,
but they would go into their dressing rooms at the break tied 1-1, with one
period left to decide the contest.
The third period began with some back-and-forth hockey that
saw both teams getting chances off the rush, but when the shots got through
both goaltenders were equal to the task.
Before the third was half over it would be Haak again
looking for the scoresheet. The shifty forward would pick up a loose puck near
the sidewall, before walking into the middle of the ice and roofing a shot over
the Storm goalie’s left shoulder to give the Junior Attack the 2-1 lead at the
6:34 mark.
The rest of the game the Storm would press for the equalizer,
but strong backchecking by the Owen Sound forwards, tight coverage by the
defencemen and a calm and collected Fry in goal would foil their attack, and
Owen Sound skated away with the win.
The squad will now look to remain in the win column this
upcoming weekend with a couple of games in the Scenic City. They open their
weekend with a game against the Kincardine Kinucks on Saturday, Nov. 11 at
12:30 p.m. at the Julie McArthur Regional Recreation Centre.
The Junior Attack Red team will close out their weekend with
a match against the Junior Attack White team on Sunday, Nov. 12 at 4:30 p.m. at
the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre.
