The Owen Sound Junior Attack under-15 Red team kicked off their
2023-24 Western Ontario Athletic Association local league season this weekend with a pair of home games.
The Junior Attack would get things going with a Friday night
tilt against the Saugeen Shores Storm at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community
Centre.
The first-game jitters appeared to affect Owen Sound early
as the Storm came out flying, using their speed to get several good scoring
chances, but Owen Sound goalie Mikayla Wingrove would stand tall in the net,
making several big saves.
But the Storm would break the ice at the 3:28 mark of the
opening frame, taking the 1-0 lead.
The Junior Attack appeared to be a little shaken by going
down early and the Storm would strike again just 44 seconds later, potting
another to take a 2-0 lead.
The Junior Attack would settle in the rest of the period and
kept the Storm at bay. When they did break through, Wingrove was there standing
tall in the Owen Sound goal.
In the second period, the Junior Attack found their stride
and traded good scoring chances with the Storm. Some pretty passing plays
produced some great opportunities to get on the board, but Owen Sound just couldn’t
find the back of the net. Wingrove was again strong in goal, making several big
stops, and the teams would go into the third with the Storm still holding a 2-0
lead.
Saugeen Shores would again capitalize at the 3:44 mark of
the third, increasing their lead to 3-0.
The Junior Attack would get several chances the rest of the
period, but the Saugeen Shores goalie was equal to the task, and the Storm
would eventually come away with a 3-0 win.
The Owen Sound Red team would return to action less than 24
hours later, with a midday matchup against the Owen Sound Junior Attack Gold
team at the Julie McArthur Regional Recreation Centre.
This time, it would be the Owen Sound Red team who would put
some early pressure on their opponent.
Just a minute into the game they would be rewarded, when
Jackson Mock would score the team’s first goal of the season, an unassisted
effort that would put them up 1-0 early.
But the Gold team would respond less than two minutes later
when they scored at the 3:16 mark, knotting the game at 1-1.
Exactly a minute later the Gold team would take the lead,
going up 2-1 at the 4:16 mark.
Following the early flurry, the teams would trade several
good scoring chances but both goalies would be equal to the task, including
Wingrove who was back between the pipes for the Red team again on Saturday.
The score wouldn’t change again until the third period, when
Owen Sound Red pressured for the equalizer. Their hard work would be rewarded
at 8:39 of the final frame when Mock would score his second of the game and the
season, with the assist going to Cole Cairns.
It appeared the game would end in a tie, but with just 43
second left, the Gold squad would pot what would be the game winner and they
skated away with the 3-2 win.
The Junior Attack Red squad will now have a
couple of weeks off before they return to action on Nov. 5, with a rematch
against the Storm in Southampton.
