Tykes weather Hurricanes for fifth straight win
Brett Warrilow scored twice and Markus Granjar-Ptok had a goal and an assist to lift the Owen Sound Jr. Attack Tykes to a 4-3 win over the Honeywood Hurricanes on Saturday at the Bayshore Community Centre.

Jaren Pirie also tallied, while Ronan Helder and Bryce Martin chipped in with assists.

Netminder Noah Lundgren turned away plenty of rubber, especially during the visitors' early onslaught, for his second win of the season.

The win marked the fifth consecutive victory for the Tykes, who defeated the Hurricanes on the road by an identical 4-3 score on Wednesday.

“I thought it took a bit to find our legs today,” said Jr. Attack head coach Rob Martin, whose team trailed 1-0 after the first period. “Once we started getting our forecheck going we really took the play to them. The game plan today was to limit their scoring chances and out work them. Mission accomplished.”

Granjar-Ptok got Owen Sound on the scoreboard after he gathered a rebound at the side of the Honeywood net and went high backhand 2:46 into the second period.

The Hurricanes, however, would regain the lead only 22 seconds later.

A relentless Jr. Attack would battle back yet again with 6:03 remaining in the second frame when Granjar-Ptok sent Pirie in alone on a breakaway where the diminutive forward proceeded to snap the puck off the post and in to knot the affair at 2-2.

Warrilow, from Helder and Martin, then provided Owen Sound with its first lead of the game at the five-minute mark of the third period when his cannon of a wrist shot eluded the Hurricanes goaltender high glove side.

Warrilow then scored his second marker of the period and eventual game winner in similar fashion on a breakaway with 4:07 remaining.

The Hurricanes were able to cut their deficit to one with 1:23 to play, but that would be as close as the visitors would come due to the defensively sound play by Owen Sound in the waning moments.

“The forwards did a good job of getting back to support our defence; our defence did a good job of holding the blue line and taking away the middle of the ice,” said Martin.

The Tykes (5-3-1) next welcome the Collingwood Blackhawks (3-2-1) to the Julie McArthur Regional Recreation Centre on Sunday, Nov. 18. Game time is 5 p.m.
