Under-15 Red team closes out weekend with big win
The Owen Sound Foodland Junior Attack Under-15 Red team were back in Owen Sound for a pair of Western Ontario Athletic Association games on the Nov. 11-12 weekend.

On Saturday, the undefeated Kincardine Kinucks were in town for a midday game at the Julie McArthur Regional Recreation Centre.

The Kinucks would come out flying early and would score two goals just 36 seconds apart in the middle of the first period to stake a 2-0 lead. They continued their pressure early in the second, potting two more goals just 19 seconds apart for a commanding 4-0 lead.

Owen Sound would settle in for the rest of the middle frame and held the high-flying Kincardine offence at bay, thanks in large part to some big saves by goalie Mikayla Wingrove.

Kincardine would score another early in the third period to take a 5-0 lead. The game would then get a little chippy, which seemed to wake up the Junior Attack.

With just under two minutes to go in the game, Derek Haak would get his team on the board on a setup from Leyton McGregor.

Just over half a minute later, Cole Cairns would find the back of the net, assisted by William Hillyer and Gavin Gowan, bringing Owen Sound to within three goals.

In the last minute, Haak would pot another, but so would the Kinucks, who left town with the 6-3 win.

The Junior Attack Red squad would look to respond on Sunday against some familiar faces as they took on the Junior Attack White team at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre.

The Red team was much more prepared this time around as they took to the ice. They garnered several strong scoring chances early in the game thanks to some great passing.

Just under seven minutes into the game the Red team would be rewarded for their efforts, with Haak finding the back of the net, assisted by Vijaenzo Tackaberry and Cairns.

The White team would respond with one of their own before the end of the period to knot the score at 1-1 heading into the second.

The teams traded several chances in the period, but it was a perfect shot up under the crossbar at the midway point of the frame that would give the White team the 2-1 lead.

But the Red squad would respond before the period was out when Jackson Mock took a pass from Cairns and tucked it home on the powerplay, leveling the score at 2-2.

The evenly matched game would continue in the third period, with both teams getting chances to score the go-ahead goal, but the goalies stood tall when the puck would get through. Jacob Fry made several nice saves for the Red squad.

The game remained 2-2 for most of the period, before the Red team would get a late powerplay opportunity, something they would take full advantage of.

They worked the puck around the offensive zone, and with just over two minutes to go in the game, Jaxon Thorpe would take a pass at the side of the net from Mock and put it home. Haak would also draw an assist on the play.

The Red squad’s defence stood tall the rest of the game and they came away with the 3-2 victory to improve their season record to two wins and three losses.

The Junior Attack are now back in action next weekend with a home-and-home against the Bruce Peninsula Predators. On Saturday, Nov. 18 they travel to Wiarton for a 4:30 p.m. tilt, before returning home to the Lumley-Bayshore on Nov. 19 for a 2:45 p.m. match-up.
