Harriston "B" Champions
In the Minto Cup this weekend, the Owen Sound Hyundai Peewee AE's team had some timely scoring, strong defensive play and excellent goaltending to propel them to a B Championship win in Harriston.

With puck stoppers Seth Gauthier and Mac Kuglin making key saves throughout the tournament, it allowed our Junior Attack to reach and win the B Championship.  Scooter Dodd played very well by leading the team in scoring 4 of the 6 goals over the weekend.  Seamus Furness and Josh Clements also had very gritty efforts playing through the bump and bruises that come with playing defense.

Game 1 vs Bruce Peninsula saw the boys play a bit flat with Scooter Dodd scoring both goals for Owen Sound.  Our boys had some unfortunate luck with Bruce Peninsula's tying goal deflecting off a stick and a shin pad making its way past Seth just inside the post. Throughout the game Seth stood tall in net making the saves and he didn't get deflated after we deflected in their second goal.  Final score 2-2.

Game 2 Owen Sound then played Shelburne and played much better outshooting their opponents 28-22; however, some defensive lapses made it difficult for Mac as Shelburne had several excellent scoring chances in the slot which allowed them to score 4 goals. Brady Blackman scoring the lone Owen Sound goal.  Final score 4-1 Shelburne.

B Championship game saw our Junior Attack go  up against the very same Shelburne team.  The boys got pumped listening to the Herb Brooks miracle on ice pre game speech.  Prior to game start, the Shelburne team was rumoured to be planning their "parade route".   Surprise!   Smiles Vandolder, Scooter Dodd and Dozer Kuekin had other plans and came out on their first shift of the game with Smiles scoring assisted by Scooter Dodd.

The team's energy and effort throughout the game was excellent.  It was impossible to tell that our team had several key regulars out of the lineup due to injury.  Shawn Kuekin, Luc Chiasson, Andrew Spitzig and Brady Blackman did an amazing job backchecking and going to the net hard in the final game.  Our "banged-up" defensive group competed very hard particularly during the last period when we were outshot 18-4 in the third period.

Mac Kuglin made some NHL style saves to keep Shelburne shut out until minutes left in the game. With under 3 minutes to go and Owen Sound playing with 2 men in the box Shelburne finally broke the goose egg and made it 2-1. With under a minute to go and the Shelburne net empty, Scooter Dodd picked the puck up at our blue line and simply put the game away with the empty net goal.

The B championship game saw all Owen Sound players step up and play hard every shift. Even though the shots on goal were not in their favour, Owen Sound clearly held the advantage of quality scoring chances during the game. All players should hold their heads high they played a great tournament.

Shots on Goal:
Owen Sound - 19
Shelburne -36

Championship Game MVP - Mac Kuglin.
