Atom Select Recent Game Run
The weather outside has been freezing, but the Owen Sound Selects have been playing some hot hockey in rinks across our area in recent weeks!

The Owen Sound Atom Selects have enjoyed a recent run of game activity, playing 6 matches in the past 3 weeks. In a remarkable show of how much this talented team has grown, they came away with a 3-2-1 record. Facing a new opponent in Atom rep Rebels, representing the Township of Chatsworth, the boys dominated at the Bayshore, winning a convincing 4-1 victory. For a team that likes to run, the close confines of the Keady arena proved a challenge and the Selects dropped both matches there. The rematch in Owen Sound in March will be a great game to watch!

The Selects met the Georgian Shores Lightning rep team, who defeated them early in the season at the Meaford tournament. This time around, Owen Sound replied with a strong 9-1 win, showing just how much they have improved since the end of October!

Meeting the Saugeen Shores Storm LL #1 in Southampton, the Selects again played to their strengths, and came away with a 9-0 victory. Jamie Nicoll and Jake Ostrom shared their first Select shutout of the season!

Tackling a challenging opponent from the fall in the Bruce Peninsula Predators atom rep team, who twice defeated Owen Sound, the Selects played an amazing game last night. The lead changed hands multiple times over 40 minutes of action-packed play. The tying goal came with less than 2 minutes on the clock from Taelum Wilkie, and the Selects skated off with a very satisfying 5-5 game.

Over the course of these games, the players have displayed their ever-growing repertoire of skills. Better stick handling, passing and skating have resulted in some terrific matches. During these 6 games, many players have notched goals, showcasing a balanced team:

Brodie Aberdein - 3
Cole Brown - 1
Isaiah Keir - 1
Ethan Kerr - 7
Lucas Merner - 2
Colin Nicol - 2
Quinton Rodgers - 2
Foster Tannahill - 2
Jayden Todd - 2
Jaiden Whitlock - 4
Taelum Wilkie – 3

The defensive teams have turned into brick walls, keeping the opposition at arm’s length. Connor McManaman has played like a player twice as big and can always be trusted to shut down an opponent’s rush. Dylan Phillips can out-skate nearly anyone and always keeps his head up on the plays. Cole Brown blocks shots and even fills in nicely as a second goalie! Jayden Todd shines as an offensive defenceman and carries the puck like a pro. Spencer Stephens has shown his versatility, playing the early season on defence, then making a move up to the forward line and now looks perfectly at home.

The season is finishing off on an exciting note for the Atom Select players. There is much to look forward to with the remaining games in the season. Special thanks to Coaches Jeff and Michael, and Trainer Jim for their enthusiasm, kindness and skill in helping the boys develop as players and team mates. Extra special thanks to Coach Greg for finding the games, organizing the practices, challenging everyone to be their best, and helping every single player get better over the course of the season! We don’t know how you do it, but we are sure glad you do!
