The Hockey Community
Jr Attack Leeder & Associates Major Atom & Oro Thunder

One thing we all know about participating in sport (and specifically hockey in this case) is that we surround ourselves with a great community.  It would be easy to think that the extent of that community is the town in which we live.  There are times however, that show us the hockey community and the connections that are made reach far wider.

The Owen Sound Jr. Attack Leeder and Associates Major Atoms have been walking side by side with one of our amazing mothers who is fighting bravely against cancer.  One of our opponents this season is the Oro Thunder.  The leadership of that team found out about the fight our mother is engaged in and wanted to help.  Oro reached out to our team manager and let Jason know what they wanted to do.  Tonight (November 24, 2018) when we travelled to Oro we witnessed proof of that wider hockey community I mentioned earlier.

The Oro Thunder Atom Rep team had a sign dedicating this game to our mother and all gate proceeds are to be donated to a charity of the family’s choice.  There was also a bake sale and 50/50 draw which will be combined with those gate fees.  The Oro Thunder joined the Jr. Attack in taping their sticks in pink and wearing pink skate laces which is of course the colour of the fight against Breast Cancer.  It was a hard fought game by both teams and the players proved that there are certainly things in life that are more important than the final score.

Immediately after the game the players came together with their pink sticks raised to salute the crowd and to show their support for those battling cancer.  The Thunder and Jr. Attack came together for a joint picture at the end of the game as well.  That was a powerful moment putting a cap on a heartwarming night.  Thank you to the Oro Thunder Atom Rep team for doing more than their part to support our Jr. Attack family.
