Major Bantams go to OT in Gold Medal game
The silverstick gold medal was up for grabs Sunday afternoon in Midland when the Kunkel Bus Lines Major Bantam Jr. Attack battled the Hespler Shamrocks.

It was clear from the warmups to the opening puck drop that both teams were fired up and ready to play. Owen Sound would strike first and despite being outshot in the opening frame, the Kunkel Bus Line squad carried a 1-0 lead into the second period.

The bears were able to find the back of the net once again to go up by two, but Hespler crashed the crease and was able to bang one home seemingly after it was covered and the whistle had blown. Not to be deterred, the Attack faced off in hopes of opening up another two goal lead. But it was Hespler that would even the match converting a 3 on 1 into a tie game. Before the second period came to an end, the Attack potted one more to regain the lead 3-2.

With a fresh clean slate of ice, the Attack struck again in the third and were up 4-2. The Shamrocks pushed back to get within one and hence gained back some momentum. The Attack pressured and came ever so close to that 2 goal lead, while the clock slowly ticked away.

Then, with 38 seconds to go, the opposition was able to get the puck through traffic and squeezed by the goaltender just trickling over the line...….we were dead locked at 4.

Spectators were on the edge of their seat, and with 38 seconds remaining, the Kunkel Bus Lines major bantams knew they had lots of time to get one more. They didn't need lots of time, as it only took 10 seconds to put one top shelf and the celebration ensued...….5-4 Attack!!!......BUT WAIT.....there was a bit of commotion and several players were talking to the lead official who clearly called it a goal. All four on ice officials had a conference, and the result was no goal.

Overtime we go.

Tension was high, both teams had some chances, and with a blast from the point, through traffic, off the goalie mask and cross bar and in, it was Hespler who were now celebrating.

The Kunkel Bus Lines Major Bantam Owen Sound Jr. Attack represented themselves, coaches, families, sponsor, and the city with class. Garnering praise from officials and tournament organizers throughout the weekend.

Then came the silver lining after the game, in the dressing room, an invitation to the International Silverstick Finals in Port Huron, Michigan come January. With the message, you deserve to be there just as much as Hespler.

It will be back to work Tuesday morning at 6:30am with the hopes and dreams of not the regional silverstick gold medal, but that of the International Silverstick Finals Gold Medal.

Hold your heads high, nose to the grindstone, and make the dream a reality.

A team is not defined by their streaks or their losses, but by how they respond when things do not go their way.
