Going for Gold
The Owen Sound Kunkel Bus Lines Major Bantam Jr. Attack will play for GOLD in the championship final today at 2pm. (Midland - North Simcoe Sports & Recreation Centre).

They started off the tournament Friday at 4:30pm defeating South Muskoka 5-0.

Games would get more challenging from there, starting with their next opponent from Orillia Saturday morning. Orillia was physical and big, but the speedy Owen Sound squad were too much to handle as they skated to a 2-0 victory.

Word has gotten out about the hard working, fast, physical hockey club that has yet to lose in regulation this season. A determined and big team from Whitby was ready to grind that to a halt. Both Owen Sound and Whitby were 2 and 0, which meant the winner earns top spot in their pool and advances to the semi-final. Break-a-ways, power plays, and many other chances both ways, but in the end, skated to a 1-1 tie. Using the universal goal differential formula to break the tie, put Owen Sound through as the goalie tandem were a combined 1 goal against for the tournament so far.

The stage was set for the semi-final game this morning. Both teams were focused and had their eye on the prize which was very evident by looking at the penalty free game sheet. New Hamburgh got on the board first and carried a 1-0 lead into the second period. The Bears ramped it up in the second and New Hambugh got back on their heels icing the puck every chance they could. Despite the domination in the offensive zone, Owen Sound could only muster one goal to knot the affair at 1 each.

With a clean sheet of ice, the game now boiled down to a single 15 minute period. It didn't take the Kunkel Bus Lines squad from Owen Sound long as they scored two quick goals to go up 3-1 early. New Hamburgh called a time out, settled down the troops, and soon after was able to get within 1 goal with plenty of time on the clock. With time running out, face off in the Owen Sound zone, the opposition pulled their goalie in hopes of getting back to a tie game. That hope was shattered when after the ensuing faceoff, Owen Sound skated it down and found the empty net and punched their ticket into the championship final.

Hespler will be the enemy, and is on a run of their own walking through the competition this weekend.
