Leighton Hurst had a goal and an assist and Maddox Burgess scored his third goal in as many games to lift the Owen Sound Canadian Tire Jr. Attack Tykes to a 2-1 road win over the league-leading Collingwood Blackhawks on Sunday afternoon.

Goaltenders Ryan Cooke and Alyssa Barnard were both spectacular in the victory, which improved Owen Sound’s Georgian Bay Minor Hockey League record to 2-4.

Suffering their first loss of the season, the Blackhawks fall to 3-1-2 and are now tied with Dundalk (4-0) for first place in the GBMHL Novice C Division.

Defenceman Jacob Gole, who was solid as a rock on the back end throughout the contest, earned the Jr. Attack’s Hardest Working Player of the Game hard hat for his efforts.

“Everyone played very hard this weekend and, most importantly, we played as a team and helped each other succeed,” said Jr. Attack head coach Rick Corbett. “Our teams are very evenly matched, but we stuck to our game plan and won some important puck battles in the last couple minutes to get the win.”

Following a back and forth opening period, Collingwood’s Jordan Moran snapped a scoreless draw at the 3:55 mark of the second period when he pounced on a loose puck at the side of the Owen Sound net.

Collingwood’s lead was short-lived, however.

Burgess responded for Owen Sound just over two minutes later when he accepted a pass from Hurst in the neutral zone, broke in alone and snapped home the equalizer.

Hurst then scored his first goal of the season and eventual game winner by burying the puck low blocker while on a breakaway at 5:43 of the third period.

On Saturday afternoon, the Tykes dropped a 7-1 road decision to the Essa Novice Rep Eagles.

Burgess notched Owen Sound’s lone goal in the loss with a shot from the right wing with 16 seconds remaining in the second frame.

Netminder Barnard, who turned aside a number of good Essa scoring chances, was awarded the Hardest Working Player of the Game hard hat.

“Compared to two weeks ago, the game against Essa felt like a victory,” said Corbett, whose squad lost by double the deficit in their previous meeting with Essa. “The kids should be very proud of themselves for the improvements they have made by working hard in practice.”

The Tykes (2-4) will be in search of their third win in four games when they hit the road for a tilt with the Honeywood Novice Rep Hurricanes (1-1-2) on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
