Tykes earn first GBMHL win
The Owen Sound Jr. Attack Canadian Tire Tykes have found the win column.

The Tykes skated to a well-deserved 4-1 victory over the visiting Creemore Novice Rep Valley Hawks on Sunday afternoon at the Julie McArthur Regional Recreation Centre.

Bennett Carr, Lucas McManaman, Jaren Pirie and Maddox Burgess scored for Owen Sound, who improve to 1-3 in Georgian Bay Minor Hockey League play. Leighton Hurst chipped in with two assists and Percey Roney had one.

Owen Sound netminders Alyssa Barnard and Ryan Cooke both played stellar between the pipes, with Creemore only able to spoil the duo’s shutout bid while on the power play with 1:46 to play.

“Hard work and good teamwork was rewarded today,” said Jr. Attack head coach Rick Corbett. “Hopefully the kids can take away the lesson that good puck pursuit will lead to more victories.”

After a scoreless first period, Owen Sound opened the scoring on the power play with just over two minutes remaining in the second frame when Carr, who by game’s end would be donning the Hardest Working Player of the Game hard hat for his efforts, drove to the net and banged home a rebound from a Hurst shot past Creemore goalie Jacob Hayward.

McManaman then wasted no time extending Owen Sound’s lead to two when, 58 seconds later, he rifled a shot that found its way inside the right post behind the Valley Hawks goaltender. Hurst collected his second helper of the contest on the play.

And the Tykes weren’t done there.

After being denied on his initial wraparound attempt, Pirie provided Owen Sound with a three-goal lead 18 seconds into the third period when he jammed in his own rebound at the side of the net.

Burgess then rounded out the scoring for Owen Sound when he accepted a nice feed from Roney in the slot and fired a perfectly placed snap shot at the 2:39 mark.

Owen Sound went 2 for 6 on the power play while Creemore scored once on four chances with the man advantage.

The Tykes hit the road for two games next weekend. They first pay a visit to the Essa Eagles on Saturday, before travelling to Collingwood on Sunday to face the Blackhawks.
