Flesherton draws first blood versus Tykes
A much-improved start from their previous outing was not enough for the Owen Sound Jr. Attack Canadian Tire Tykes to stave off the visiting Flesherton Golden Hawks as they dropped a 6-4 decision on Sunday at the Bayshore Community Centre.

Brett Warrilow and Bryce Martin each had a goal and an assist for Owen Sound.

Markus Granjar-Ptok and Ronan Helder also scored for the home side while Cody Cox contributed an assist.

“I knew going into the weekend they were going to be challenging games for us,” said Jr. Attack head coach Rob Martin, whose squad was edged 3-2 in Creemore on Friday. “Both games showed that we can compete against any team that we have faced. When the kids apply the skills we work on in practice we can be a tough team to play against. Now it’s about being consistent.”

Warrilow wasted no time in getting the Tykes on the scoreboard first when he took a nifty feed in the high slot from Martin and buried a shot only 12 seconds into the contest.

Flesherton, though, would rally for a pair of goals to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.

Following a tight-checking, scoreless second frame, Flesherton broke open the contest at the midway point of the third period by scoring two goals in a span of eight seconds to take a commanding 4-1 lead.

It appeared Martin had gotten Owen Sound back in the game when he notched his team’s first of two power play markers on a breakaway; however, the Golden Hawks were able to regain their three-goal advantage only 24 seconds later.

Granjar-Ptok provided Owen Sound with a late spark when his shot from the slot soared over the right pad of the Flesherton goaltender with just over five minutes to play.

But just as they had done all afternoon, Flesherton would seize any momentum Owen Sound had garnered by going up 6-3 less than two minutes later.

Owen Sound’s Helder rounded out the game scoring on the power play with his first tally of the season. The swift-skating winger sped in all alone after accepting a heads up pass from Cox and rifled a shot low corner with 2:16 remaining.

Owen Sound went 2 for 8 on the power play while Flesherton was held scoreless on three opportunities.

The Canadian Tire Tykes (5-5-2) will look to get back to their winning ways when they pay a visit to Flesherton (7-2) in the back end of a home-and-home set on Friday. Game time is 7 p.m.
