Firefighters end season in Detroit
A lot of fun was had and the boys finished off their season in the Motor City this past weekend

The Minor Bantam Firefighters faced some really good teams this past weekend during the Motown Cup in Detroit. Playing 3 AA teams during round robin play they didnt win a game but they did keep it respectable and earned the respect of these AA teams.

Game 1 Friday night saw the boys face a tough Belle River AA squad and kept it close for the 1st but Belle River took over the game and put it away for a 5-1 win. Mac Kuglin played steady between the pipes but took the loss in game 1. Tanner Prior got the lone Owen Sound goal.

Game 2 Saturday saw the boys come out much stronger against a big Ancaster AA squad and it was a much better game all around. Ancaster scored early and that was the only goal they needed. the firefighters had several chances throughout the game, and if they had any kind of bounces at all it could have been a very different outcome, but was not the case. Reese Pettigrew played well throughout the game keeping it close for the boys, however Ancaster iced it late in the 3rd with an empty netter to preserve the win.

Game 3 Saturday evening was a back and forth game against a big AA team from LaSalle. it was close through 2 as it was tied 3-3, but the bigger LaSalle team put it away in the 3rd with 2 unanswered goals to ice the game. Goalie Mac Kuglin played well, however took the loss. Brady Brown had a pair with Jordan Lawrence adding a single.

After the round robin was played Owen Sound was seeded 6th and played a Tier 2 semi final game against the tough Belle River team on Sunday morning. This had to be the best game of the weekend. The boys came out all fired up and both teams had chances throughout the game but the Belle River goalie and Owen Sound netminder Reese Pettigrew didnt want to let the other team win. After 3 periods of play and a 5 minute OT period it was dead locked at 1-1. This is where it got really exciting and nerve racking for all. It went into a shootout, and I mean a shootout. 20 shooters from each team traded shots. Reese Pettigrew played a very solid game between the pipes and stopped 15 of 20 during the shootout and it came down to Owen Sounder Jordan Lawrence to break the 5-5 tie during the shootout. In he went with lots of confidence, faked one way and buried in the back of net to win it for Owen Sound. WOW is all this writer can say. What a game to watch and what an effort by the Owen Sound Crew. Reese Pettigrew got the win. The win put the Owen Sound squad in the Tier 2 final later on Sunday

Game 5 was the Tier 2 final, and the Owen Sounders faced a big and solid Southpoint Capital team. Again this was a solid game for the boys and it was tough fought close throughout. it was all tied up 3-3 when late in the 3rd the Southpoint team kept the puck in the zone and shot came from the point, went through some skates and sticks and beat Owen Sound goalie Kugs between the 5 hole. That proved to the be the winner despite the late efforts of the boys to tie it up. Mac Kuglin took the loss but played well. Brady Brown with a pair and Nathaniel Dodd all scored for Owen Sound.

Overall it was really great weekend in the Motor City and the boys should hold their heads high as they played some very solid AA teams and held their own and beat one of them in the semi finals. Great job boys.

On another note, I would like to thank all of the kids, parents and bench staff for a successful, fun year of hockey. It was a pleasure being part of this years team with a lot of new faces and old ones too. We will hopefully be having a year end function shortly and I hope everyone can make it. Again thank you all very much for your dedication, time and support.
