The 42nd Annual Wayne Gretzky Int'l Hockey Tournament Results Dec 27 – 29th 2011
The Owen Sound Garb & Gear Minor PeeWees participated in the 42nd Annual Wayne Gretzky International Hockey Tournament in Brantford, Dec 27 – 29th 2011.

Owen Sound opened up the tourney getting caught off guard by the Host Brantford 99’s on Tuesday morning.  Owen Sound kept Brantford confused for the first couple of periods but as time went on they netted a couple.  Owen Sound just couldn’t seem to penetrate through the 99’s strong defensive play, although Owen Sound did have their chances, Brantford’s Goalie was on his game as well.
Final score Brantford – 2 Owen Sound – 0.

Tuesday afternoon Owen Sound met a rival from their own league the Woolwich Wildcats.  Owen Sound meant business when they jumped off to a 3-0 lead in the first two periods.  Woolwich somehow seemed to spring back to life in the third and managed to tie the game.  Nearing the final minutes of the game Owen Sound fought desperately to hold the cats back including excellent net minding by #1 Briten Marcell who stopped numerous attempts.  Scoring for Owen Sound was # 2 Josh Hamil from #10 Tyler Scott.  #15 Branson Thalen unassisted and # 2 Josh Hamill’s  2nd  from #12 Keegan McIlmoyle.
Final Score Owen Sound – 3 Woolwich – 3

Wednesday morning Owen Sound met the St. Thomas Jr. Stars a team they played once before at the O/S Silver Stick Qualifier.  An aggressive and strong club with one thing on their minds and that is to drive to the net.  Owen Sound’s goalie Britten Marcel was tested over and over again.  Too many scrambles in front of the net became too hard to defend, thus the Stars were able to take advantage of these chances.  Owen Sound worked hard to create some chances of their own and before long #3 Ryan McNiell broke the shut out, assisted by #10 Tyler Scott which helped to relieve some pressure.  Owen Sound was not able to score again.  St Thomas was only able to score 4 times thanks to Britens’ quick reflexes and strength holding his ground.
Final Score St. Thomas – 4 Owen Sound – 1

Owen Sound advanced to the quarter final round on Wednesday afternoon and met the Barrie Jr. Colts who had won each of their first three games.  Barrie was quite confident and showed it by having more of the puck possession during the game. Finally Owen Sound’ s #18 Jacob Lumley was able to break the Colt’s shut out, assisted by #5 Cody Cunningham.  Over all Owen Sound was denied advancing any further in the tournament but truly were respectable in all of their games.
Final Score Barrie – 3 Owen Sound – 1
