2018-19 REP - PeeWee Maj - Harold Sutherland Jr Attack Peewee’s are International Silver Stick Champions!
Submitted By Jeremy Stewart on Monday, January 14, 2019
Your Harold Sutherland Jr Attack Peewee’s travelled over the border to represent Owen Sound at the 57th Annual International Silver Stick Tournament in Port Huron, Michigan. They played confidently as a team with class and character bringing home the Championship with 6 straight wins; 2 of them shut outs with a record of 44 goals for, and only 4 against, as well 3 of our own were named All-star!  Congratulations to Nathan Garret also awarded MVP, Leighton Hurst, and Ethan Dunbar your team is proud!

The round robin games can be summarized best by how the Port Huron Time Herald newspaper described the opening game in their Saturday’s paper between the Harold Sutherland Jr Attack and the hosting Port Huron Flags. “It was over almost as quickly as it began”; and it was for the three teams the Jr Attack faced. The Jr Attack won the tourney opener 15-0 on Thursday night against the Flags setting the tone for their round robin play. Friday night they faced off against the Richmond Generals from Virginia. The Jr Attack defeated the Generals in similar fashion with a score of 11-1. The final round robin game was played against Colorado’s Hockey Club Gold team. Arvada played hard but were still no match for the dominant team play of the Jr Attack and fell 7-1 on Saturday seeding the Harold Sutherland Jr Attack against the St Thomas Stars for their quarter final game.
The Jr Attack had met the St Thomas Stars earlier in their season. Beating them in their own barn earning the Jr Attack a tournament championship so they knew they were in for a tough quarter final game. The game was as expected, fast paced with hard fought battles and a low score. The Jr Attack took the lead scoring late in the first, but the Stars were able to tie the game up with a goal late in the second period. After intermission the Jr Attack came out for the third period looking confident and focused. They controlled the third period and scored two quick goals 5 minutes into it. St Thomas tried everything they could to get back into the game but to no avail. The Jr Attack won 3-1 to advanced to the semi finals against the Soo Lakers from Sault St. Marie Michigan.
The semi final game was as tough as the quarter final game. The Soo Lakers were the last U.S. team left in the tournament and for good reason. Again, the game was fast and low scoring. The Jr Attack held strong, played as a team, and with big stops from their goalie shut the Soo Lakers down 3-0 advancing the Harold Sutherland Jr Attack to the Championship game!
For the Championship game the Harold Sutherland Jr Attack were matched up against the Quinte West Hawks. The Hawk’s are a high ranking Ontario team that dominated their series of games leading them to the championships at the tournament as well, so it was a great final match up.
The Jr Attack were seasoned and ready for action, scoring two goals in the first period of play. It was clear Quinte was desperate as they tried throwing the puck towards the Jr Attacks net any opportunity they could but could not get through the goal tender. The second period the Jr Attack scored their third goal of the game but Quinte quickly responded and finally found the back of the net making it 3-1. Just 30 seconds later The Harold Sutherland Jr Attack would respond with a quick goal making it 4-1 at the end of the second period. A 4-1 lead had the Jr Attack in a good position to win the game but they knew it was going to be a long 15 minute period so they couldn’t back off Quinte. The third period was full of action with big saves and lots of cheering from the family and friends in the stands. There were no goals in the third period until the final seconds of the game when Owen Sound would bury an empty netter ultimately sealing the Championship with a final score of 5-1!
An amazing accomplishment for these boys! Another notch in the belt to which has been a great season for this team! They are proving that with hard work and team play they are undefeatable!
The boys stood proud and were impressive representatives of your town and country. Thank you to the friends and family that were there supporting, we had a great crowd!!
Congratulations to you all!!!
